5-Year National Capacity-Building Community of Practice for Harm Reduction Services

Building off previous successes building capacity with harm reduction services, this project aims to increase the capacity of harm reduction services nationally to provide stigma-free and culturally safe services resulting in changes to policies and practices to increase access to these services. This work is guided by people with lived and living experience.

This is accomplished through:

  • Tailored one to one capacity-building training
  • Including customized learning opportunities and experiential learning
  • Targeted/national community of practice calls
  • Knowledge translation products created and stored within a national online repository to centralize pertinent knowledge for stigma-free, culturally safe harm reduction services

Objectives

Objective 1: By 2027, the national community of practice for frontline harm reduction service providers and organizations will have held 70 community of practice video huddles which will increase the capacity of 60% of 75 participating frontline harm reduction service providers and organizations to provide culturally safe and stigma-free harm reduction services, and 40% of participants or organizations will report implementing a policy or practice change to improve the cultural safety and stigma-free nature of the harm reduction services they offer.

Objective 2: By 2027, 60% of the 75 frontline harm reduction service providers who participate in our tailored, one-to-one capacity-building training, including customized learning opportunities and experiential knowledge of a wide range of harm reduction services, will report increased capacity to provide culturally safe and stigma-free harm reduction services, and 40% of participants or organizations will report implementing a policy or practice change to improve the cultural safety and stigma-free nature of the harm reduction services they offer.

Quotes

“I thoroughly enjoyed touring the various sites in Toronto and got to see first-hand how things can vary from place to place. I've taken home a number of ideas that can be implemented in the SWAP program, as well as the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACNL) as a whole. This exceptional opportunity was extremely valuable and informative for our work in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
