The Dr. Peter Centre has an HIV/AIDS Day Health Program and 24-hour care Residence. The majority of clients also struggle with a range of concurrent disorders including substance use and psychiatric diagnoses. The counseling department is part of a multidisciplinary team that works in accordance with the principles of self-empowerment, harm reduction and the therapeutic community model.

Position Description:

The relief counsellor works directly with clients and is responsible for individual, couples and group counseling, as well as dealing with crisis management and client advocacy and referrals. Personal qualities that are preferred for this position are the ability to be proactive, genuine, engaging and a good sense of humour.

Skills & Knowledge:

• Excellent knowledge of the medical and psychological issues of people with HIV/AIDS and substance use issues.
• Experience and comfort working with a diverse range of adult clients.
• Familiarity with the Harm Reduction approach.
• Ability to provide intake assessments.
• Experience working with a multidisciplinary team and leading a team when required.
• Excelling personal and professional boundaries and ethics
• Expertise in dealing with interpersonal conflict and crisis management.

Qualifications:

• Masters degree in Psychology or Social Work
• 3 to 5 years’ counseling experience
