Melissa & Newton

Please welcome our new therapy dog, Newton. Newton is a Pacific Assistance Dogs Society dog who works with recreation therapist Melissa Clave Brule.

An integral part of the Dr. Peter Centre team, Newton provides unconditional love for our participants and residents. Newton's happy face, wagging tail and warm nature attract everyone who visits the Centre and makes participants and residents feel special.

Recreation therapist Melissa Clave Brule reports that Newton can "break the ice" with someone who otherwise might not want to chat or be involved in Centre activities, easing them into the community of care that is built on acceptance and support. Newton returns the love and kindness he receives with great enthusiasm.

The participants and residents like to brush him, pet him, rub his belly, hug, kiss and play with him. They may have a quiet moment with him as he rests his head on their lap, or be more active, playing ball or going for a walk. He encourages conversations about past and present pets, and fond memories are frequently shared. He has an amazing ability to sense when someone needs to just sit and be close, while rubbing his ears or stroking his head.

Many participants and residents seek him out throughout the day to sit and cuddle, talk to him and even shed a tear as he provides them with his strong, silent support. Newton is the Centre's prized treasure, with both staff and clients referring to him as "our dog".
