The Cornerstone: Winter 2012
World AIDS Day

Dr. Peter’s mother, Shirley Young with BC Premier Christy Clark at the Dr. Peter Centre on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1st, 2011.
World AIDS Day 2011 was a day to
remember at the Dr. Peter Centre. Premier Christy Clark, Councillor
Andrea Reimer and Dr. Julio Montaner (Director of the BC Centre for
Excellence in HIV/AIDS) joined the Dr. Peter Centre’s Maxine Davis
for Check Up: HIV/AIDS in BC 2011. Dr. Peter Centre clients,
community members, politicians and the media filled the Centre’s
café to hear the dignitaries and experts reflect on the past and
speak about the state of HIV/AIDS in BC in 2011.

The Holidays
Thank you to everyone who made the
holiday season so special for clients of the Dr. Peter Centre.
Johnny, a resident at the Dr. Peter Centre’s 24-hour specialized
nursing care residence was thrilled to receive an electric train set
courtesy of the Elf Project – an initiative from some of our
dedicated supporters that ensures our residents receive a special
gift and holiday dinner over the season.
A Special Stocking Stuffer from a Classmate of Dr. Peter
A few short years before he joined The Oppenheimer Group, BC’s oldest company, John Anderson was a classmate of Peter Jepson-Young (who became Dr. Peter) at Balmoral High School in North Vancouver. Now, John Anderson is the chairman, president and CEO of the international fresh produce marketer and distributor, and he recently arranged a meaningful gift for Dr. Peter Centre clients.

Attendance Up by 45%
December 2011 marked the first anniversary of weekend service in the Dr. Peter Centre’s day health program. Attendance in the program has increased by an incredible 45% since changing from a 5-day program to a 7-day program.
We’ve also recorded increases across the board since the start of seven
day service. Overall contacts between our clinical team and clients
increased by 35%**. Basic support contacts increased 22%**. In some
cases, there were enormous increases reflecting the fact that we can now
offer more opportunities to engage our clients in specialized
counseling and therapy programs, such as art therapy attendance (up
196%**).
The most telling increases were recorded in the area of nursing. We
have long known that many of our clients require daily support for their
HIV treatment and medication needs and the numbers show significant
increases in key nursing support services (see below).
Fact:
We served over 50,000 nutritious meals in our day health program from December 1st 2010 to December 1st 2011.
