But for the Grace Of God, Go I
Irene Player, Kitchen Volunteer, Dr. Peter Centre
Four years ago while watching the PRIDE parade I was given a “handout” that invited people to volunteer at the Dr. Peter Centre. I took it home with me, thought about it for a month and decided to inquire.
I was accepted, trained, and I made my first nervous entry into the “family” by the beginning of November. I was so welcomed by staff and Day Health Program participants that alll my fears gradually disappeared. It seemed I only needed to be myself. I would rate the experience right up there with getting married and having babies. Don’t laugh…volunteering at Dr. Peter Centre changes everything. The staff are so inclusive, but it isn’t about them or the volunteers, it is about the participants. They are part of all of us. They try so hard. Sometimes they feel so ill but do not complain.
“But for the Grace of God go I”, could I handle things as well as most of the participants? I hope so. I don’t know. To look into the Dr. Peter Centre family is to find every kind of person there is…men, women, young, not so young, likes dislikes, talents, feelings. Everybody is there. Thanks for including me.
Irene Player has been a kitchen volunteer at the Dr. Peter Centre since November 2000. Every Monday Irene travels by transit from Coquitlam and spends a full day in the kitchen at the Dr. Peter Centre. Irene was recently recognized for 1,000 hours of volunteer service to the Dr. Peter Centre. Thank you Irene!
